Thinking Space

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain

The Artwork of Dan McCarthy

1 of 70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Through the use of contrast, the artist is able to provide two different portrayals of the same image. His use of logos leads the audience to understand the thoughts he is trying to convey. At first glance, the image seems to indicate a sense of accomplishment; of being ‘on top of the world’ because the man is standing at the top of a mountain, with the sun behind him. However, the second portrayal of this piece, “in the dark”, shows that as humans, we are only a small, fairly insignificant part of the universe. The artist shows this by obscuring the man, making it difficult to see him among the trillions of stars. So, for all of our accomplishments, they are nothing compared to the vastness of what lies around us. The artist intended to initially mislead his audience so that it would be easier to understand what he is trying to say.
